How to apply for a qualification if you are a school student

Flexible Industry Programs (also known as FIPs), include VET qualifications at Certificate II and III levels that industry considers suitable for school students. They also include employability skills or specific industry requirements linked to the program.

Applications must be submitted by your school

If you are interested in studying with TAFE SA as part of your secondary schooling, the first thing you need to do is speak with your school career counsellor or VET Coordinator, and make sure you meet the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria for Flexible Industry Program courses

Students must meet the following key eligibility criteria:

  • An Australian citizen or,
  • A permanent Australian resident or,
  • An eligible visa holder

and:

  • Are enrolled in Year 11, 12 or 13, and are undertaking SACE or equivalent,
  • Are 16 years of age or turning 16 years of age in the year of enrolment,
  • Have relevant industry exposure, accredited training, or SACE curriculum-based project work,
  • Have not already studied a qualification at the same level that you are applying for,
  • Undertake the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO), including the Upfront Assessment of Needs, and Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment.

Each step should be completed the year before you'd like to study.

Term 1

Talk to your School VET Coordinator or Career Counsellor about your interests.

Term 2

Prepare for VET Pathway

  • Explore careers
  • Attend immersion activities
  • Enrol in a short course
  • Undertake work experience
  • Gain paid employment

Term 3

Schools submit application to study VET

  • Must be submitted by your school
  • Shows evidence of your relevant career preparation
  • Meet eligibility for subsidised training (Skills SA)

Term 3

Participate in VETRO

  • LLN Assessment
  • Planning for Support Needs
  • Suitability Assessment

Term 4

Receive Outcome

  • Eligible for subsidised training: offered a place to study with TAFE SA whilst at secondary school
  • Not eligible for subsidised training: continue with full time education at secondary school
