Entry Recommendations
We recommend that applicants with no or limited knowledge or skills in community services study a Certificate III in Community Services before this course.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
This course is delivered through a blend of two compulsory on-campus workshops a week, and online study.
Workshops are usually from 9.30 to 4.00pm, and occasionally from 9.00 to 5.00pm. Start dates and workshop days differ between campuses:

  • Regency Park – Term 1 (Tuesday & Wednesday) and Term 3 (Thursday & Friday)
  • Elizabeth – Term 1 (Wednesday & Thursday and Term 3 (Monday & Tuesday)

Industry Conditions and Skills
You are encouraged to consider your personal wellness and your capacity to interact with and be assessed on traumatic course content. You will need to have basic computer skills.

Additional Uniforms, Equipment and Costs
Working with Children check and a National Police check.

Vocational Placements
You will do a vocational placement of 100 hours in a local industry specific setting. You will need to have current vaccination and screening checks before starting your vocational placement.

Mandatory Requirements
You will need to have a current Working with Children Check. Some industry partners may also require a current National Police Check, COVID-19 and flu vaccinations that you may need to meet or show evidence of.

  • Employment Outcomes

    This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations, home based outreach, centre-based programs, respite care, residential services, rehabilitation programs, clinical settings, or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

    Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

    Certificate IV in Mental Health (CHC43315)
    This course covers working with diverse people, legal and ethical requirements, relationships, recovery-oriented services, networks, trauma-informed care, self advocacy, wellbeing and workplace safety. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 11 core units and 4 elective units plus 140 hours in a vocational placement. Vocational placement hours for existing workers will vary depending on experience in their related field of work.

    Note: Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
