Description

This course aims to develop Auslan language skills for confidently communicating about familiar topics within routine as well as some more challenging contexts. This includes holding simple conversations and giving presentations, making announcements and following simple instructions and directions.

This course will also prepare you for further formal Auslan language study and is a part of the pathway towards Interpreter or Teacher of the Deaf training.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
This course is delivered as a blend of face to face and online learning. Language learning is face to face with 2 classes of 3 hours a week plus some work out of class. Day and evening classes may be available. The 2 theory units are studied online. 80% attendance in each unit in a term is needed to successfully complete this course. Duration at Whyalla Campus is 15 months.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You will need reasonable skills in reading, writing, face to face communication and basic research. You also need to be able to use online learning and have computer, organisation, time management and study skills.You should be willing to adapt to deaf cultural behaviours in signing spaces such as the classroom. These behaviours include: refraining from speaking or using voice, working in a brightly lit room without eye coverings (such as sunglasses), use of attention gaining methods like flashing lights, loud and sudden noises and appropriate touch (such as on upper arm).

    Certificate II in Auslan (PSP20218)
    Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Deaf Community in Australia. Sign language is a visual spatial language which uses hand shapes and movements as well as facial expressions and body language. Auslan has its own vocabulary and grammar that is different from that of spoken languages. This course begins with introductory signing skills and then moves on to developing skills for confidently communicating in routine and challenging contexts. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 3 core units.

    This qualification begins with introductory signing skills and then moves on to developing skills for confidently communication in routine as well as some more challenging contexts. The course aims to develop the Auslan communication skills for a variety of situations such as casual conversations with deaf family and friends or communication with deaf colleagues and clients at work, moving onto a broader range of context and social contact. This course will also prepare you for further formal Auslan study, including interpreter training and teacher of the deaf. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 6 core units.
