Electrotechnology is a growing industry that is essential for the energy dependent lifestyle of today and the future. Areas such as domestic and commercial electrical installations; electrical power generation and distribution; telecommunications and security systems; air-conditioning and refrigeration; instrumentation and process control; renewable and sustainable energy; and electric vehicles and rail transport are all part of this important industry.
You will learn the fundamental electrical skills and knowledge you need to be work ready and have a pathway towards an apprenticeship as an electrician. Many leading South Australian electrical companies consider this course to be an essential pre-apprenticeship qualification.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)

  • Regional
  • Port Pirie / Port Augusta / Whyalla – TAFE SA intends to deliver a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) to service the regional area encompassing Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla.
    The final single delivery location will be determined by applicant numbers and access options for students to maximise delivery availability in the region.
    Future delivery will consider a rotation of delivery location(s) to further support the region to support applicant numbers.
  • Metro – Full Time – 3 day per week – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8am – 4pm

Industry Conditions and Skills
You will need:

  • practical hands-on aptitude
  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • a basic understanding of concepts including measurements, calculations, volumes, levels, ratios, pressure, use of hand tools, temperatures and chemicals.

Additional Uniforms, Equipment and Costs
Incidental Items - $75 for Textbook charged directly to students. In addition, you will need to purchase and wear your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, safety glasses and appropriate workwear (eg long pants, long sleeve hi-vis shirt) approx. $100 - $200.

    This course is regarded by industry as an essential pre-apprentice course for those seeking a career within the Electrical industry. Students gain skills suited to careers across a wide range of sectors within the Electrotechnology industry. Careers include; Electrical worker, Linesperson, Renewable energy technician, Instrumentation or Automation and Control technicians.

    Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

    Qualifications & Skills Covered

    Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) (UEE22020)
    Students complete 12 units covering the knowledge and skills typical of those performed by apprentices in the early stages of training. 9 units are transferable into the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (apprentice) course reflecting most of the training of a first year apprentice. The content of this course includes theoretical understandings and practical tasks. Theoretical knowledge includes electrical principles, cable and component identification and Practical tasks such as house wiring, light fabrication and circuit construction. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 8 core units and elective units totalling 140 points.

    Note: Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
