Description

This course aims to develop Auslan language skills for communicating with a measure
of fluency and ease within a broad range of contexts and with a range of Auslan users about a range of topics, including abstract matters. This includes engaging in everyday conversations, technical discussions and being able to share a viewpoint on a topical issue.

This course will also prepare you for further formal Auslan language study and is a part of the pathway towards Interpreter or Teacher of the Deaf training.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
This course is delivered as a blend of face to face and online learning. Language learning is face to face with 2 classes of 3 hours each a week plus some work out of class. Day and evening classes may be available. The 2 theory units are studied online. 80% attendance in each unit in a term is needed to successfully complete this course. This course can be completed in 12 months part time.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You will need very good skills in reading, writing, face to face communication and carrying out and presenting research . You also need to be able to use online learning and have computer, organisation, time management and study skills.You should be willing to adapt to deaf cultural behaviours in signing spaces such as the classroom. These behaviours include: refraining from speaking or using voice, working in a brightly lit room without eye coverings (such as sunglasses), use of attention gaining methods like flashing lights, loud and sudden noises and appropriate touch (such as on upper arm).

    Certificate IV in Auslan (PSP40818)
    This qualification provides signing skills to communicate in Auslan with a degree of fluency and spontaneity across a wide range of subjects. Communication may take place in any situation including personal, public, social, employment and educational domains. The course also aligns to an adaptation, for sign languages, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), B2- Independent User. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 8 core units and 1 elective unit.

    Note: Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
